Last quarter, I took the time to tout the benefits of the Technical Communication Certificate program presented through UCSD's Extended Studies. Our enrollment did take a little bump up for Summer 2024, and I'm hoping the post here helped make that happen! Here I am again, except this time, I'm offering all of you the opportunity to take a class we all can use: Critical Thinking. For those of you wondering why you would want to take this class, take a look at this excerpt from "Why is Critical Thinking Important?" at https://lnkd.in/gd4c8p9R: "Critical thinking is a fundamental skill that allows individuals to analyze, evaluate, and interpret information objectively and rationally. It goes beyond merely accepting information at face value; instead, critical thinkers are equipped to delve deeper, question assumptions, and explore various perspectives before arriving at well-informed conclusions. This ability to think critically is highly valued across various domains, including education, business, and everyday life."Critical thinking is a highly prized ability in the workplace and many employers are looking for those who can conceptualize, analyze, and evaluate information accurately. In today's world of misinformation, how can we determine what is accurate and what is not? Find out how to spot the fallacies used by politicians, marketing writers, and others to lead you astray. And, along the way, get in a little writing practice.I hope you consider taking this class--it's a required class for the technical communication certificate, but it is also of great value to anyone who reads, writes, and thinks. And, I'm pretty sure that covers everyone. Hope to see your name on the class roster on 23 September. To register, go to https://lnkd.in/gvizpBFF.

Every single course in that program was relevant to my work in technical communication. But, as you mentioned, critical thinking applies to everything in life. It's a great course and I highly recommend it and the Tech Comm certificate program. ✍️⭐👍

It's summer and if you want to sharpen your technical editing skills or learn about technical editing, the University of California, San Diego Extended Studies, has a 10-week course you might like beginning on 24 June 2024. To sign up for a single class or check into the full certificate that this class belongs to, go to https://lnkd.in/ghxMeFRm . This summer's Basics of Technical Editing class is to be taught by me and all lessons and work are done remotely. You can sign up and take the class from anywhere in the world that has an internet connection! Although each week is self-paced, students do have requirements to turn in each week. Students and instructors communicate through Canvas, the robust LMS used by the school. Discussion boards take the place of class conversations. Each week's discussion topic usually expands to other topics of interest, and discussions are interesting and valuable. The class is a basic one, so you learn about proofreaders' marks, some grammar/punctuation, hardcopy editing, online editing, and editorial comments to your writers. We even learn a little about breaking into the field and understanding the history and future of the career. I hope to see your name on the roster!#technical communication #TechnicalEditing #TechnicalWriting #TechnicalCommunicationCareer #Writing #UCSDExtendedStudies

For any of you anyplace around the world, the UCSD Extended Studies Technical Communication Certificate program is one that will prepare you for a career in technical communications. The program has a great set of electives and is taught by folks who are strong technical communicators (she says humbly...). Recognize that this program is NOT a certification such as the CPTC that the Society for Technical Communications provides--instead, you can take single classes or opt for the whole certificate and learn the skills that will lead you toward the ability to one day test and receive the CPTC. I recommend it highly. See the blog for specifics and links.Linda OestreichSTC FellowUCSD Instructor

Interested in a challenging 10-week program discussing (in discussion forums) and learning about Critical Thinking? Consider signing up for Critical Thinking for Communicators at UCSD Extended Studies (continuing education). This class can be taken as part of the Technical Communication Certificate program or as an individual class to enhance your own reading, writing, and learning processes as a more critical thinker. For more information, please check out https://lnkd.in/gvizpBFF.As it turns out, I'm the instructor for the upcoming all-virtual class that begins on 25 September! Students over the years have come from all over the States and from several different countries. It's a class that you can access on your own time. No real-time meetings--you get lectures and materials entirely through the Canvas LMS. I hope to see you there!

Hello All! If you are a technical communicator or hire/work with technical communicators, I'd appreciate it if you take a few minutes to answer a brief survey. I am writing an article for the Society for Technical Communications magazine, Intercom, and I'd like to get some feedback from the community as I put together my information. Here is the link: https://lnkd.in/gsssVYuEIf you can't answer all the questions, that's OK! Even a few short answers to some of the questions will help me get a better idea of the current world of technical communications.THANK YOU!Linda Oestreich

To my technical communication contacts: Do you know about Easy English? This area of writing and editing is new to me. I'm wondering if it's fairly new or if I've just been disconnected. Does STC have any information about it? Should it? Can technical writers and editors be concerned about those who have literacy challenges or would our audiences automatically not be able to be in that category? Not surprising that this article was brought to me by a student in my Critical Thinking class...seems it has made me think and wonder! Here the article that piqued my interest. Your comments are appreciated. https://lnkd.in/gURgvgqP

Re: Sherri Smith--STC Fellow, Houston, TXJust a note to my followers that our dear colleague, Sherri Smith, passed away in September. De Murr and I wrote an obit for Intercom that will be published soon. Here's a copy of that memory. Details for remembrances are in the copy of the obit.
